Flooding induced various physiological and morphological changes in Fraxinus pennsylvania, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. globulus and Pinus halepensis seedlings. Responses to flooding included stomatal closure, leaf epinastry, reduction in growth of shoots and roots, production of hypertrophied lenticels and adventitious roots on submerged portions of stems, change in orientation of newly-formed roots, development of aerenchyma tissue, stem splitting, exposure of stem wood, and inhibition of formation of secondary needles. However, these changes varied appreciably among species. For example, although production of thick, sparsely branched root systems was a common response to flooding in all species except P. halepensis, only F. pennsylvanica and E. camaldulen-sis formed adventitious roots and only F. pennsylvanica developed hypertrophied lenticels on submerged portions of stems. Leaf epinasty was observed in both species of Eucalyptus but not in F.pennsylvanica or P. halepensis. Production of new upwardly growing roots from the top of the tap root was observed only in the two species of Eucalyptus. Flooding reduced dry weight increment of 8- and 10-week-old F.pennsylvanica seedlings, with greater reduction in the younger seedlings. In both age classes dry weight increment wasreduced more in roots than in shoots. Flooding greatly increased leaf diffusion resistance (r1) (induced stomatal closure) within a day in 8-week-old F. pennsylvanica seedlings and within 2 days in 10-week-old seedlings. The r1 value of both... MenosFlooding induced various physiological and morphological changes in Fraxinus pennsylvania, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. globulus and Pinus halepensis seedlings.
